Coach Urban Meyer Press Conference

Rundown of Ohio State’s 2013 Recruiting Class

There was a huge buzz last season when Urban Meyer became the new sheriff in Columbus, OH, as the head coach of The Ohio State Buckeyes. Fortunately for the Scarlet & Gray, that buzz has not yet worn off. In fact, it’s only gotten stronger. After only having a short amount of time to shore up as good of class as possible last year with the late arrival of him and his coaching staff, Coach Urban Meyer still managed to round up a top-10 recruiting class for 2012, highlighted by a top-notch defensive line group. Fans hoped – and downright expected – an elite recruiting class for 2013, and the Ohio State staff delivered beyond our wildest dreams.

Should the NCAA pay its athletes?

Should College Athletes Get Paid?

It’s an age-old topic that has become more relevant lately with the booming success of conference television networks and realignment – should the athletes playing the games that bring in so much money and notoriety to their universities get paid for their efforts? Opinions and viewpoints hit on all points of the spectrum, so I thought I would take some time and share my thoughts.

Final DR Pick Contest Standings

As many may know, every year The (Wooster) Daily Record sports department puts on a 9-person pick’em contest with the panel being made up of 7 Daily Record sports writers, 1 radio personality, and 1 weekly guest. They use all area high school games, a few from surrounding areas, and choose a few college and NFL games each week to round out the slate. I thought it would be fun to see how I did against the sports writer professionals and local fans; so as you may have seen over the course of the last 10 weeks, I decided to follow along and post my picks as the weeks came and went, comparing my record with the rest of the crew. Week 10 marked the end of the pick contest, so here is how everything finished.

My Week 10 (Final) DR Football Picks

So this is the final week of the Daily Record Pick Contest, and the final week of the high school football regular season. It doesn’t get any better than this, with plenty of gigantic rivalries and huge showdowns all across Ohio! While the normal teams are still covered this week, it’ll be fun to be looking at other high school teams we don’t usually cover, such as Massillon, McKinley, Dover, New Philadelphia, St Ignatius, and St Edward. There is a neck-and-neck race in the pick’em standings, too, so it’ll be nice to finish the contest with such big, important, meaningful games. Let’s jump right in!

Week 9 Results and What I Learned

One game to go until all the league races and playoff hunts come to a close. In week 9 there was some cold, rainy weather across the state, but that’s part of football as we get into October and eventually into the November playoffs. The Daily Record Pick Contest continues to get tighter and tighter as we head into the final week of the season. It should be a great finish, both in the pick’em and in area football! Let’s take a look at the developing stories, what I learned from week 9, and what we have to look forward to for week 10.

My Week 9 DR Football Picks

It’s week 9 arleady? Gosh! It seems like it was just 8 weeks ago that we started this whole thing. It’s amazing how much time really does fly when you’re having fun. I’ve been having fun this year – especially with the success of the Titans – which has helped the season move along. Playoffs are coming soon. Many area teams have a chance at making it, and I can’t wait to get out there to watch them! Before we can get there, though, we have to finish the regular season. Here are my picks for this week.

Week 8 Results and What I Learned

The biggest games of the weekend were in the NCAA ranks. Notre Dame won in overtime over Stanford on the set of GameDay, LSU snuck by South Carolina at home, and then Oklahoma and Wisconsin put beatdowns on Texas and Purdue, respectively. It’s interesting how the landscape of college football at the national level changes week-in, week-out. As for high school, while upsets can and do happen (as evidence from week 7 shows), this past week was relatively uneventful in terms of the results, even though there were a few close games.

Week 8 Results

My Week 8 DR Football Picks

Every game all year matters when it comes to league races and playoff spots. But from here on out, each game has a direct correlation to how things play out, especially for the playoff hunt. In the WCAL, Norwayne finally reaches the toughest stretch of their league schedule. In the PAC, Triway and Manchester face off for a de-facto league championship game (but if Manchester beats Triway and loses to CVCA week 10, there could be a 4-way tie!). In the OCC,  Mansfield Senior now has the edge; but with as deep as the league is, they’ll be challeneged each and every week from here on out. Last week’s high school games may have been crazy, but the last few weeks might not be for the faint of heart.

Week 7 Results and What I Learned

Holy cow! What a crazy and fun Friday night of high school football full of upsets and big, exciting match-ups. Playoff races were shaken up, and conference battles, especially the PAC and OCC, got much more interesting! There’s definitely a reason they play the games. With only 3 weeks left, playoff talk gets more serious. Each game has a clear impact on where each team will stand in the race to be in the top 8 of each region. The pick’em had a shake-up of its own, too.

My Week 7 DR Football Picks

Four more weeks left until the high school playoffs. Getting into week 2 of Big Ten action in college football. The NFL is moving on to week 5. It took forever for this season to get here; but once it got here, it has flown by faster than any season I remember. Lots of stories – both good and bad – and plenty of good teams in the area to talk about. This week is no different from the others with some key match-ups that will help determine conference and playoff standings. Let’s jump right in!
